The slideshow above provides main idea examples you can use to help practice main idea and details with your elementary students. (For more main idea resources and ideas, check out these blog posts.)
Begin by having students predict what details might be included on a book based on its title.
Then, have students read 4 statements, determining which statement is the main idea.
Next, have students read short paragraphs that have a sentence included that does NOT support the main idea. Students must figure out which sentence does not belong.
Finally, have students create their own paragraph based on a given main idea.
